Why We Chose the Flemish Renaissance
The Italian Renaissance is often the centre of attention – Florence, Leonardo, Michelangelo. But between the 14th and 15th century, a parallel revolution was taking place further north: in the Flemish and German lands, artists were quietly rewriting the rules of visual representation. Our project began from a simple question: What if the Renaissance wasn’t only Italian? From there, we dove into a world of oil paint, symbolism, domestic interiors, realism and light.

What the Project Includes
The website guides the visitor through: • The historical context of Flanders and Germany in the 1400s • The rise of a new merchant class and private commissions • The technical shift from tempera to oil painting • The power of light and detail in Northern realism • Three masterpieces analysed in depth, with artist, technique and meaning Special focus was given to Robert Campin, one of the pioneers of early Flemish naturalism – a key figure often overshadowed by better-known Italian contemporaries. The project was created by a group of students passionate about art and education. Each section was researched, written and designed with care, keeping one mission in mind: to show that innovation in art is not only Italian — it is European.

What Comes Next
This is only the beginning. We’re working on expanding the digital archive to include interactive maps, timelines and visual comparisons with Italian masterpieces. More artists, more stories, more ways to understand art. Stay tuned — new updates and projects are coming soon.
